What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy and how can it help?
By Matthew Griggs
This is the question I am often asked when people find out I am a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist, often quickly followed by will you “make me cluck like a chicken”! Well the answer to the second question is very definitely no, in fact modern clinical hypnotherapy couldn’t be further removed from the theatrical performances you may have seen at a theatre or on television. I offer a free initial consultation, which lasts between 40 to 60 minutes so that I can properly answer the first question above, however in general terms this is the answer:
Homeopathy is a system of medicine which involves treating you as an individual with highly diluted substances, given mainly in tablet form, which aim to trigger your body’s natural system of healing.
Based on your specific symptoms, I will match the most appropriate medicine for you. Because homeopathy is individualised, it can be used for patients with a range of conditions. For more information on homeopathy visit my register, the Society of Homeopaths’ website.
Much of my working life was in the stressful corporate world of ever increasing pressure and deadlines. Over the years this not only impacted my body with tight muscles leading to headaches, discomfort, and difficulty in sleeping, but also affected my emotional wellbeing and left me with little energy to cope with additional stresses. I’ve always had a passion for massage and the range of benefits it can provide, so when I reached a point where I had to make a positive change in my life I again looked towards massage. This led me to train formally as a holistic massage therapist to do something that will make a positive difference to the lives of others.
I hope everyone has had fun, relaxed, enjoyed the outdoors, the abundance of nature and the long hours of daylight. Tim and I have been in the countryside of Mid and Southern France, practising our yoga and tai chi respectively, swimming in rivers and lakes, reading and eating delicious food. Perfect restoration, recharging our batteries and giving us space and time to appreciate all that we have.
One of the books I took with me was the Bhagavad Gita, The Song of the Lord. It is a classic yoga book and probably the best-known of all Indian scriptures. The backdrop is a battlefield, which seemly is about a war but it is really about the battle within us, the exploration of consciousness, the struggle for self-mastery, to live a life that is meaningful, fulfilling and worthwhile. An early and universal message written down to inform us that there is more to life than the everyday experience of our senses, it asks and answers questions about how to live effectively in a world of challenge and change, and so despite being written maybe 1000 years BC it is universally relevant to us all.
In the dialogue between Arjuna the warrior and Krishna an incarnation of God, Krishna says
“On this path (of yoga) effort never goes to waste, and there is no failure. Even a little effort toward spiritual awareness will protect you from the greatest fear” 2:39.
New Classes & Courses
As the evenings draw gently in and we settle back into our daily rhythms of work and school, the teachers and therapists at the Dorchester Yoga and Therapy Centre resume their weekly and monthly offerings, and the timetable is full once again. As always there are changes and classes that come and go and we are pleased to offer a new beginners class on Monday evenings with Claire Jones, and welcome a new teacher Maxine Craig teaching Zen Yoga on Monday mornings.
We are very excited to have Dr Kausthubha Desikachar with us again in September to teach the 3-year Viniyoga Yoga Therapy Course.
We have 5 teachers involved in this Advanced Level traditional training, Kim Mackie, Fred Burnham, Arianna Moretti, Sarah Ryan and myself. This will bring some disruptions to the timetable whilst it runs from the 5th to the 15th of September. But as with the last year and a half, the centre will be filled with Vedic chanting and a marvellous energy, the teachers will deepen their knowledge, and everyone will be the better for it! If anyone would like to have a private session with Kausthubha please contact Sarah Ryan at saryan6630@googlemail.com
We are also very happy to welcome back Derek Thorne. Deeply established in the teachings of Advaita Vedanta (the oneness at the heart of all things) Derek is able to bring clear, insightful and inspiring vision to these timeless teachings and to articulate them with clarity and flair. Derek leads the Vedantarama Community (vedantarama.com) and has over 30 years experience guiding and directing people in living and applying the profound teachings of Vedanta and navigating this human experience.
Marj Snape writes: “Derek has been my teacher for 25 years. This influence and the application of the Vedanta teachings have brought great spiritual stability and security into my busy, engaged life. If you are at all curious about spirituality, meditation and the deep underlying philosophy of Yoga join us for this morning of dynamic and exciting teaching.”
The session will include discourse, simple guided meditation and the opportunity for Q & A. Suitable for all levels of experience. Derek will be teaching the ” The Mystery of Perception: What am I and what is all this?”. For more information and to book: https://www.dorchesteryoga.co.uk/courses-workshops/#the-mystery-perception
Kundalini teacher Arianna Puran Udini is bringing a change to her monthly Gong baths, as she is excited to share her new Crystal Singing Bowls with you in September’s and October’s Sound Bath, making a change to the Venus Gong. The bowls are all tuned to the frequency of 432Hz so they resonate together. This frequency can help to reduce stress and anxiety, enhance mental clarity, promote healing and pain relief amongst others, and is the perfect antidote to overthinking, overwhelm, and emotional turbulence. The Venus Gong is back in November!!! For more information: https://www.dorchesteryoga.co.uk/courses-workshops/#healing-sound-bath

All our usual lovely monthly classes resume, you can find all the details below, we can’t wait to have you all back again.
“You have the right to work but never to the fruit of work. You should never engage in action for the sake of reward, nor should you long for inaction. Perform work in this world. Arjuna, as a man established within himself – without selfish attachments, and alike in success and defeat. For yoga is perfect evenness of mind.” ~ 2:47-48 The Bhagavad Gita ~
We hope you have had a wonderful Summer, enjoyed the outdoors and relaxed. I was lucky enough to swim in beautiful clear mountain lakes, walk in the pure fresh air of magnificent mountains and have some time with old friends on my Summer holiday. It relaxed me, recharged me, it allowed me to shift gears.
Taking in the views, swimming, reading novels, cooking and enjoying simple camp food felt like one long meditation. A meditative connection with my surroundings, allowing me to shift from the rush of everyday life… a shift to a low vibrational state of peace that immersed me and connected me deeply with nature. I observed others on holiday busy, with a need to do this and go here and there… and was thankful for my own situation. My daily yoga practice was mostly pranayama; I had time to explore my breath in a deeper way, reaping the benefits, helping me slide effortlessly into relaxation.
The coming month is a time to move into a calmer pattern and more regular rhythm after the high energy and excitement of Summer. We hope some of our workshops support you in finding your rhythm. Meanwhile, all our regular classes resume and as we settle back into our routines.
With best wishes from Sharon and all the teachers and therapists at Dorchester Yoga and Therapy Centre

We are pleased to have Hannah Lovegrove (pictured), an experienced Dorset Iyengar teacher, offering workshops throughout the Autumn. The first one is at the end of the month.
To celebrate the Autumn Solstice we have a drumming workshop with Nicki Greenham who has recently joined us with her wonderful monthly Tuning Fork workshops.
We hope you have had a wonderful Summer and maybe like us, enjoyed yoga, tai chi or pilates in some different or unusual locations. We would like to share some of our photos with you:
Phew! Yoga never stops!
As we settle down to our Autumn routines, and come back to our weekly classes we have lots of changes to share here at the Dorchester Yoga and therapy Centre.
Nikki Oakley is established in her Re.Form Pilates studio. If you haven’t seen her yet, pop your head around the door and say hello, she is very happy to explain all that goes on behind the poster!
We have two new teachers: Helen Daniel and Rosy Kearney. A warm welcome to them both.
Helen is offering Yoga for Blokes which is exactly what it sounds like! Rosy is a newly qualified British Wheel of Yoga teacher and she is taking over the Beginners Yoga Class on a Friday morning at 9:00. Jez Culley was teaching this and is taking a break in beautiful Croatia; we wish her wonderful travels and thank her for all her teachings.
There are quite a few changes to the timetable from September onwards so check it out to see what is on and make sure your favourite classes are still where you thought they were.
We are always open to suggestions if there is something you don’t see and would like.
All our regular workshops are back, the gong baths and sound baths, yin, restorative and Iyengar with a few new special events too!!
True yoga is not about the shape of your body,
but the shape of your life.
Yoga is not to be performed;
yoga is to be lived.
Yoga doesn’t care about what you have been;
yoga cares about the person you are becoming.
Yoga is designed for a vast and profound purpose,
and for it to be truly called yoga,
its essence must be embodied.
~~ Aadil Palkhivala ~~
Welcome to September. We hope you have found time to escape your normal routine, and have enjoyed some Summer fun, either by relaxing, or being active, being social or finding a quiet space; whichever were your requirements.
My Summer read was “A Lonesome Dove” a Western novel by Larry McMurty, with wise words no matter what the season:
“It may be we’ll meet down the road” July said
“Perhaps… I see you are in a hurry to get someplace. It’s a great mistake to hurry” Mr Sedgewick said.
“Why?”
“Because the grave’s our destination, and those who hurry usually get to it quicker than those who take their time…”
For many, September brings a settling back into routines after the excitement of Summer, although hopefully with many more beautiful days to swim in the sea, and enjoy nature in our gardens and beautiful surrounding countryside.
We welcome back some of our teachers who have had their summer breaks, and settle into our Autumn term. Marj Snape is back with Morning Meditation and a new 5 week course ‘Finding Stillness’. Nancy returns with her Gentle Yoga on Tuesday lunchtime, Sharon Morgan is offering a new class ‘Better Balance Pilates’ and a Tuesday and Wednesday morning Pilates class, and Chrissie Haskett is back with Monday and Wednesday morning Yin Yoga classes. We have a new Tai Chi class starting on Thursday evenings with Tim Button at 6:00 – 7:30pm and of course all our regular classes and workshops.
We have a great mix of workshops to take us into the Autumn; a mixture of dynamic and slower classes depending on your preferences.
I am so pleased that there is a September newsletter and that we have opened our doors again to our students and clients. Many of our teachers and therapists have been busy behind the scenes teaching online and I am sure many of you have enjoyed that lifeline of yoga in your own homes, or someone to help on a screen or phone.
Welcome back after the summer break, we hope you have had a wonderful summer and enjoyed the great outdoors, both here in our beautiful Dorset and maybe further afield. As usual at this time of year we like to share photos of yoga in more unusual places and surroundings, here are a selection:
Excuse our slightly longer newsletter this month as we have lots of news about all the wonderful classes, courses and workshops on offer this Autumn.
